The Special Operations Command (COS) is a remarkable entity within the French army. With over 4,000 men and women, the COS illustrates the synergy and competence of military personnel from all three branches of the armed forces, capable of operating in varied contexts, from air to sea. The History of COS

The COS, born from the initiative and vision of General Maurice Le Page, was officially created by an order signed on June 24, 1992, by the then Minister of Defense, Pierre Joxe. General Le Page, inspired by allied special units, particularly American and British, established the foundations of the COS by drawing inspiration from their models, adapted to the needs and structure of the French army.

Today, the COS is under the command of the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces and under the direct authority of the President of the Republic. Its staff, composed of military personnel from the three armed forces and specialists in various fields (health, communications, cyber, etc.), is based between Balard (Paris) and BA 107 in Villacoublay (Yvelines).

The Strategic Missions of COS

The missions of the COS, defined by the order of January 5, 2017, consist of planning, preparing, coordinating, and conducting special operations. These operations, carried out outside conventional frameworks, aim for objectives of strategic interest. They include environmental actions, opening up operational theaters, interventions on high-value targets, and the fight against terrorist organizations.
