"Par le sang versé" (By the blood shed) refers to the quatrain of the poem "Le volontaire étranger" (The Foreign Volunteer) by Pascal Bonetti (1920), often quoted by the French Foreign Legion: "Who knows if the unknown sleeping under the immense arch, mingling his epic glory with the prides of the past, is not this foreigner who became a son of France, not by blood received but by blood shed." A phrase that has become emblematic of the sacrifice of foreign combatants who fell for France, particularly in Indochina.
