"The Angel of Dien Bien Phu" is the nickname given to Geneviève de Galard, an air transport nurse, the only French woman present in the entrenched camp of Dien Bien Phu during the battle. Her medical plane, immobilized by bombing on March 28, 1954, could not take off again. She remained on site with the wounded until the fall of the camp on May 7, 1954. On April 30, 1954, she was named honorary first-class private of the French Foreign Legion during the Camerone commemoration.
