"The Sacrifice of the BEP" refers to the Foreign Parachute Battalions—the 1st BEP and the 2nd BEP—involved in Dien Bien Phu. The 1st BEP, already battle-hardened in Indochina, was air-dropped on March 21, 1954, into the entrenched camp. The 2nd BEP was parachuted on April 9, 1954, to reinforce the garrison as the situation deteriorated. Both battalions fought until the fall of the camp on May 7, 1954, paying a heavy price. Their sacrifice has become emblematic of the Foreign Legion's commitment in Indochina.
