RAID (Recherche, Assistance, Intervention, Dissuasion - Research, Assistance, Intervention, Deterrence) is the elite unit of the French National Police, created on October 23, 1985, by Interior Minister Pierre Joxe on the recommendation of Commissioner Robert Broussard. Specializing in combating terrorism, organized crime, and hostage situations, it notably led the assault on the Hyper Cacher in 2015 and the Saint-Denis operation on November 18, 2015. Its headquarters are in Bièvres (Essonne), and its motto is "Servir sans faillir" ("To serve without fail").
