The Groupement Commando Montagne (GCM) is the elite unit of the 27th Mountain Infantry Brigade (27th BIM). Inheriting from the Ski Scout Sections created in 1931 and the Human Research Unit, it gathers around 200 commandos distributed among the alpine hunter battalions, the 4th Chasseurs Regiment, and the 93rd Mountain Artillery Regiment. Specialized in combat in high mountains and extreme climatic conditions, mountain commandos carry out intelligence missions, support for engagement, and small-team actions. It is the only unit in the French Army trained for operational paragliding flight.
