Saint Michael the Archangel has been the patron saint of French paratroopers since 1949, and more broadly, the figure of reference for airborne and commando units. Chief of the heavenly armies, he embodies the warrior who defeats evil and defends his own — the image of the standing, determined warrior who does not back down. For those who jump, who engage on the front line, who go on external operations, he represents protection, courage, and faithfulness to the mission. His feast day, September 29th, is celebrated every year in paratrooper regiments and special units.
