The Groupement Commando Montagne (GCM) is the elite unit of the 27th Mountain Infantry Brigade (27th BIM). Heir to the Sections d'Éclaireurs-Skieurs created in 1931 and the Human Research Unit, it comprises approximately 200 commandos distributed among the chasseurs alpins battalions, the 4th Chasseurs Regiment, and the 93rd Mountain Artillery Regiment. Specialized in high-mountain combat and extreme weather conditions, the mountain commandos carry out intelligence missions, engagement support, and small-team operations. It is the only unit in the French Army trained for operational paragliding.
